Windows 7 Ships October 22nd. Confirmed.

win7launchdate

Let me cut the BS, and get to the real meat:

Windows 7 starts selling on October 22nd. Microsoft has confirmed it.

Windows 7 will ship to OEMs about 3 month before we get it. They have told the media that they will release the OEM version of Windows 7 the last 2 weeks of July. It will come in 6 flavors: Starter (OEM and parts of the world), Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise. An average North American consumer will just go to the store and buy Home Premium, while power users might get Professional or Ultimate edition of Windows 7.

Microsoft did not reveal the cost of Win 7. Hopefully it’s a nice low price, or I’ll just switch to Ubuntu and keep Vista as a gaming OS.

This means that Vista is pretty much dead. I’m very happy about this. Vista sucked. In fact, I’m writing this post in Windows 7 RC. So far I find it to be very good. Surely there is a couple bugs here and there, mostly related to waking up from sleep and hibernation (power button restart is required). I’m giving MS the benefit of the doubt, because they cannot screw Windows 7 up. If they do, they will lose a bunch of people to MacOS and Linux, especially in these troubled time (drink!); people are more willing to just get a free OS and live with it. I remember ZDNet did a test where they show people KDE 4 to random people on the street and tell them that it is Win 7 and most of them bought it.

By the way, you can still grab Windows 7 RC right now. Go get yours before it expires (Download stops in July, when the OEM version ships.) at Windows7.com. The RC will have a bi-hourly shutdown starting March 1st 2010, and expires on June 1st 2010.
