Windows 7 E – Browser Selector for the win! Or for the lose…
It seems like it’s just yesterday that Microsoft had taken Internet Explorer out of the European version of Windows 7. Now, Microsoft put in a “browser ballot” for the users.
This is the second time that Microsoft has taken a piece of bundled software out of Windows. Last time it was Windows Media Player.
This could be a good thing or bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Let’s break this down:
Even though this looks like there are more pros than cons, this could mean that a lot of other things may also get a “selector”. For example, we probably will have a media player selector in the near future since Windows Media Player is already removed in Windows E. EU could also decide that they couldn’t bundle WordPad with Windows because that’s a monopoly, therefore resulting in another selector screen. They may also decide that Paint bundled with Windows is a monopoly, which will make MS add another selector screen and so on.
That would be a lot of selectors.
Personally, I think Microsoft should be able to bundle Internet Explorer to its O/S. That is the reason why Internet Explorer exist. Forget how bad IE is, the reason of its creation is to allow Windows users to have a browser when the O/S is installed, and don’t have to go through all the trouble and get a browser themselves, although people do that anyway, to get a browser. If this EU rule is applied to the world 20 years ago, Microsoft probably wouldn’t even create a browser. Why bother when other companies already make browsers and people can just download their own browser. MS probably wouldn’t get a lot of criticism over how bad its browser is, how they are a monopoly by bundling its own browser etc.. They could also save a lot of money on developing applications like Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer.
I think my point is that even though they spent millions of dollars developing for these applications, they still get so much crap. I realize that IE is pretty bad, but they shouldn’t be sued just because they put their own software in their own O/S. They don’t deserve the amount of crap they get now.
Does this mean that Google Chrome OS don’t get to bundle Google Chrome because it is a monopoly?
