Microsoft Word are no longer allowed to be sold -not
Let me cut the bullsh*t, and get straight to the point. A company named “i4i” sued Microsoft for patent infringement. Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a permanent injection that “prohibits Microsoft from selling or importing to the United States any Microsoft Word products that have the capability of opening .XML, .DOCX or DOCM files (XML files) containing custom XML,” which basically is Word 2007 and Word 2003 entirely. This will prevent Word to be sold anywhere in the US, at least.
i4i Chairman Loudon Owen claimed that his intentions are “certainly not to stop the sell of Word” and they are seeking a permanent injunction of using their product, in this case it is custom XML, within Word.
This raises a good question, what about OpenOffice? Chairman Loudon Owen claimed that its difficult to determine who is actually infringing patent and they “did their homework” and believe that Microsoft infringed their patent.
If i4i don’t want to stop the selling of Word, what does he want? Chairman Loudon Owen want Microsoft not to incorporate custom XML but still allow MS to sell Word. Basically, he is denying the right to create custom tags etc.
My take on this: This i4i is just looking for a big fat check. Why wouldn’t they sue companies like Corel, who built WordPerfect, or OpenOffice? That’s because these companies aren’t as rich as MS is. It certainly looks like that they are going to get that check, because Microsoft couldn’t just not sell Word.
Microsoft will continue to sell Word when the resolve this issue with i4i privately, and by that I mean giving them a lot of money.
