Tr.im goes open source. WTF?
It looks like that Tr.im has just went open source. Eric Woodward, the creator of the URL shortener tr.im, recently announced that he is going to take Tr.im offline indefinitely. After about a day or two, he back track that statement and say that they will keep supporting Tr.im, and now this? WTF? I have never even heard of Tr.im before this. I bet they are just trying to stay in the news.
As most of you may know, Bit.ly is currently the Google of the URL shortener, taking about 80% of the market share. Tr.im claims that as long as Bit.ly is used by Twitter as the default URL shortener, they could never be anything.
I find the whole concept of URL shortening very stupid. First of, why do we even need to have any URL shortening service? You might say that it’s used for SMS and Twitter. Well, SMS and twitter doesn’t have to have a text limit. Second, why do we have these outrageously long URLs? Can’t wee all just make them shorter? Thirdly, why do we have a SEPERATE company hosting your short URLs?? Why? Can’t we all just host them ourselves? Now that Tr.im is open sourced, it’s even easier. You can also just get your permalink to be http://your-domain.com/<id>, like what we have set up here.
