Twitter Spam FTW?

Twitter SpamThere is one question that is stumping me. Twitter as a company cannot figure out how to make money, yet spammers are rampant, probably scamming people out of millions. How is Twitter a good spamming platform? It seemed at first, that Twitter wouldn’t have much of a spamming problem, I mean, what could they really do? Well, after the first wave of spammers came, @spam was created. If you followed that account, you could report any spammers and BAM! Gone. Well, at first that worked, with most spam accounts going under in about 3 days but more came, and people seemed to become tired of it all. Around July, Twitter really smashed the banhammer and most spammers were gone. My account, (@patman21) lost about 20-30 spammers. This tactic was working for some time, and still seems to be effective. I now have very few spammers.

Twitter spammers have a unique way to sell you viagra. Most of the types that I found follow as many people as possible, hoping for people to follow them back, then send Direct Messages (DM’s) with there spam. Another type will look for keywords, then @reply you with the spam. For instance, I have typed before complaining about a web host, and got several spammers offering me their services. The third main type of twitter spammer is the most annoying. They will post nothing but trending topics, and one link. Click on any trending topic, and you should see spam aplenty! (it seems like that isn’t the case any more)

I have found that the best ways to see if someone is a spammer is to 1) check out the follower/following count. Spammers usually have 800-900 people that they are following, and usually have the same number of followers. 2) Check the tweets. Do they usually post the same thing? Mostly @replys, or suspicious links? Chances are, they are a spammer. 3) ask them if they are a spammer. If you don’t get a reply, then that person is a bot who won’t answer @replys. There are also hijackers on twitter, where they would insert a random url in the end of a regular post.

This article wasn’t meant as an introduction to twitter, just about the spam. Thx for the feedback though!
