The Future of GUI’s
If you look at the latest updates for almost every piece of software, you might notice something. The interface has stayed the same. The following is a random list of programs who’s interface didn’t change much, if at all in the new releases.
Firefox 3 – 3.5 – Mozilla decided to make a .5 release instead of a full one this year, and just gave it speed and a handful of features
Mac OS 10.5 – 10.6 – Apple added a couple of features and made it faster. No interface changes
AVG 8 – 9 – Once again, just speed.
IE 7 – 8 – the only interface change was the look of the tabs. From a gloss shine to a gradient
Adobe Reader 8 – 9 – Speed
As you can see from that list, most software changes has just been performance ones. Even Apple’s hardware hasn’t changed! I think what just happened was companies were trying to go for the shiny glass interface, (remember 2003-2008) interfaces were changing in everything. Now we have all of this pretty, shiny, and transparent crap and we are happy. Companies are now trying to patch the holes, and make things faster. I predict that in the next 2 years, the interface changes will come back again, and will be focused on streamlining everything. Making it more natural feeling. We are already seeing that with Windows 7. The features that they have added were meant to simplify it. Companies are going to make things easier, imagine ubuntu as easy to use as mac.
