Ubuntu: Good and Bad

With 9.10 released just days ago, here are some highlights and some lowlights.

I have to say, Ubuntu 9.10 is a very impressive operating system. It’s speed is incredible. Compared to its Windows and Mac counterpart, it maybe the fastest O/S. A lot of things are designed very simple in Ubuntu 9.10, especially the software installation process, unless the software is not available through the official Ubuntu channel, which makes things a little more complicated.

The OS has very handy features like the 2 workspace system, something I truly wish would come to the Windows family without a need for a third party application. The apps preinstalled with Ubuntu 9.10 is sufficient for most average users, although getting used to the interface maybe a little bit more challenging.

However, there are severe problems with this OS. The driver installation is a big problem with the OS. Although most computer will have not too much of a problem, my computer’s graphic driver and audio driver encountered some fatal problems. The graphic driver is installed via my previous tip (isn’t it awesome that you have to refer to your own tips in order to solve a problem?) . The audio still doesn’t work and I have no idea on how to solve the problem.

On Windows, you would simply go to the manufacturer’s website and find the driver to install. On Ubuntu, you don’t get that luxury. With that few adoption of Ubuntu, manufacturers generally do not put up drivers for Linux. Even if they do, you would have to compile and install, which is a huge pain in the @$$, especially for new users.

Some people will argue saying that Ubuntu is much more flexible when it comes to customization. However, in order to achieve wide-spread adoption, Ubuntu has to have more GUI customization option. I shouldn’t have to use the terminal alsa-mixer to adjust the volume.

Ubuntu 9.10 is impressive, but not yet ready to take over the OS world.

Better luck at making Ubuntu 10.04!
