Will Bing Ever Overtake Google?
We know Microsoft. They haven’t changed much since their monopolistic ways in the early 2000s. It seems that they are now pulling all the plugs on Bing. Getting all the rights to use other companies data, making everything shiny, etc. Google, in a typical Google fashion, didn’t do much. There are now a few design changes, and they are nice, but Google has mostly ignored their competition.
Google (in my understanding) is a company that thrives off of making things work before they make it fancy. If you look at Google Chrome, it has very few features, is fast, and isn’t very buggy. Google search is fast, clean, and not buggy. When Google introduces a feature, they make sure that it works before people get to use it. (see gmail, in beta for almost 5 years) Microsoft introduces features first, then makes it stable (see ME, Vista).
Google tends to not go in to a market for the profit’s, but more for improving it. Look at Chrome. Google made it open source, and encouraged people to use the features and improve it. They continue to sponsor Mozilla, a competitor.
Microsoft doesn’t seem to be in the search market for the overall improvement of the industry. They want money. I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with making money. Q2 of 2009, Google had about $1.5 Billion in earnings, but the difference between Google and Microsoft is their ethics. Google (at least looks like they) wants to improve markets with their technologies. They are focused on helping the environment, and increasing employee morale. Microsoft, is the Walmart of technology companies.
What do you think? Bing or Google.
Update: I was wrong in saying that Google isn’t changing much. Google has and is releasing loads of features lately, and it seems like Bing is copying all of them after Google released them. I think someone needs to add the word innovation to Microsoft’s dictionary.
