A Decade in Review: 2002-2009

I’ve been a lazy bastard and it seems like theres no hope of me finishing this by the New Year if keep going year-by-year. So I’m just going to cover the rest of the decade in one long blog post.

Following the wake of the 9/11 attacks, a reign of terror was felt all over the world. The question was not whether or not another attack would occur, but when. Not only was there immense fear, people were pissed. They wanted sweet revenge for what went on in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. And Bush promised to deliver it.

A few months before, back in October, Afghanistan was invaded by US and British Troops. The corrupt Taliban regime was thrown out, and immediately replaced with the corrupt Karzai regime. It seemed like things were going great, until, in early 2002, The United States prooved once again that it doesn’t know how to finish a war.

Also, the war drums beat for another corrupt middle-eastern dictatorship, Iraq. The US and Iraq had once been best friend (much like the US and Al-Qaeda, I might add) but ever since ‘91 there had been a falling out between the two powers. So, the nation geared up for war as Dubya and his cronies pressed on about how Iraq had WMDs.

The bombs fell on Baghdad in March of 2003, and everyone was certain that the brave US soldiers would find those WMDs that Bush promised us.

They didn’t. But the war continued, and abuses of power to both our people and the Iraqi people continued, highlighted by Abu-Graib prison.

Also in 2o03, Bush’s post-9/11 popularity began to plummet. The war was a major factor in this, with protests held all over the world, but also the P.A.T.R.I.O.T Act, a piece of legislation designed to “protect” (control) the American people was beginning to be seen as what it was, the first step in making an American dictatorship.

2004 brought another election, in which John Kerry “Reported for duty.” He lost. Badly. And so the world was doomed to 4 more years of Bush. In sports, many old people in Boston could finally die, as there beloved Red Sox won.  The first “free election” happened in Iraq, of which I am certain there was no fraud at all (in case you couldn’t tell, that was sarcasm. Google it.)

In 2005, the any hint of Bush’s credibility died in New Orleans. The costliest and most deadly disaster in US history, Hurricane Katrina, cost the lives of 1836 people. FEMA, the organization meant to deal with the disaster, did nothing. Thanks, FEMA.

In 2006 the Middle Eastern situation worsened, with rumors of war with Iran abound. North Korea also threatened the stability of the world, testing it’s first nuclear bomb. Global warming became a more important topic than ever before, with the release of An Inconvenient Truth.

In 2007… uh….

In 2008 another election came, and hope and change became the new buzz words. Obama became a cult symbol on the left, and a symbol of derision on the right. McCain the maverick was upstaged by his VP choice, Sarah Palin, who I’m just not going to talk about, as I don’t want Ulti to be taken down on slander charges. Obama won the election, ending the Republican reign of terror.

The economy started to tank in 2008, and, because of the greedy actions of a few bankers, millions lost there jobs and lively hoods all around the world, in what was the worst economic disaster since the great depression.

Mumbai was attacked by terrorists. The entire city was held hostage for 3 days of terror.

Oh, and Bush had a shoe thrown at him. It’s a shame the guy missed.

And finally we are brought to 2009.  As the economy continued its downward slide, health care reform was being debated in Washington. Now, if you are one of the teabaggers *ahem* tea partiers, who are afraid of what might happen in a “Socialist” medical system, let me tell you about Canada’s. It’s great. You don’t have to worry about bills, and the wait times are greatly exaggerated by your media. In 10 years you will all wonder why you waited so long.

A  bunch of celebrities died this year also, from the unknowns, like Micheal Jackson (some singer I think) to the true A-Listers, like Billy Mays. A MOMENT OF LOUDNESS PLEASE!

On Christmas, another terrorist attack nearly happened. Let’s be thankful that it didn’t

So, that was the decade. It was a decade of high points and low points, mostly low points, but, as the first decade of the third millennium comes to a close, lets just remember that this was one of the most important decades in human history, more important than the ’20s the ’30s the ’50s, the ’60’s the ’70’s the ’80s and the ’90s.  So suck it, inferior decades, suck it.
